About The Home Years

Why this exists

Most health information written for older adults is written by someone with something to sell — a device, a supplement, a residence, a plan. The advice is not necessarily wrong. It is just shaped by the thing at the end of it.

The Home Years is an attempt at the opposite arrangement. We do not sell products, we are not owned by a company that does, and no manufacturer or retailer has any involvement in what we publish.

What we cover

The subject is narrow on purpose: health, safety and daily living for people ageing at home, and for the families around them. Medication routines. Sleep. Hydration. Hearing and vision. Falls and the night-time hours when most of them happen. Movement. Social connection.

These topics share a characteristic. They change slowly enough that nobody notices, and they are addressable once somebody does.

How we work

Every factual claim carries a numbered footnote pointing to a named source, and the sources are listed in full at the foot of each article. We rely primarily on the National Institute on Aging, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Center for Health Statistics and the other institutes of the National Institutes of Health.

Where the evidence shows an association rather than a cause, we say so. Where we do not know something, we say that too.

What we are not

We are not clinicians and this is not personal medical advice. Nothing published here can account for your own history, medicines or circumstances, and none of it should displace a conversation with a doctor, pharmacist or nurse who can.

What we can do is give you the questions worth asking at the next appointment, and the sources to bring with you.
